Day 6

Scripture to Read: Luke 10:17-20

The seventy had returned, and God had Luke record this about their arrival in Luke 10:17–20: “The seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.’ 18 And He said to them, ‘I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.’” Needless to say, the seventy were pretty excited about all they had seen God do in and through them. Jesus spoke of Satan falling from heaven. Theologian David Guzik explains Satan’s fall, as he says, “Falling like lightning from heaven doesn’t mean that Satan fell from heaven, but that his fall was as dramatic and sudden as a bolt of lightning from heaven. According to Job 1:12, 1 Kings 22:21, and Zechariah 3:1, Satan still has access to heaven. Yet the success of the disciples against demonic spirits was confirmation that Satan had fallen from his place of authority and power and that although he was still powerful, he was in an inferior place.” This is a great reminder to us all that though we face an adversary, God has given us everything we need to overcome him (Ephesians 6:10–18, 2 Peter 1:3–11). Though we have all of this, Christ wants us to rejoice that our names are recorded in His book in heaven.

Challenge & Application

What does it mean to you, knowing you have all you need to overcome the power of the enemy each day? What does it mean to you, though, that your name is recorded in the Lamb’s Book of Life?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus knew He had many more cities to go to in order to fulfill all the Father had sent Him to do as Lord and Savior of all mankind. God had Luke record the following in Luke 10:1–2, “Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. 2 And He was s...

Day 2

Jesus described to His seventy disciples what it would be like for them as He sent them to prepare the way for Him. Jesus said in Luke 10:3, “Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.” Sending lambs into the midst of wolves seems foolish, but it reminded the disciples that they could not do what Jesus commanded without God’s...

Day 3

Jesus gave further instructions to His seventy disciples. They were to bring a blessing of peace to each house, if the home would receive it. The disciples were not just bringing a greeting, but they were measuring whether this man and his household were ready to hear the Gospel of Peace. The disciples were carrying the Good News from house t...

Day 4

There came a heavy price for the cities that rejected the seventy messengers and their message. Jesus told the seventy in Luke 10:10–11, “But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, tha...

Day 5

Jesus laid out some pretty heavy words in Luke 10:16, “The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.” As Jesus spoke to the seventy disciples, He told them that the message He gave them to share carried as much weight as if Jesus Himself were delivering the...

Day 7

Jesus definitely rejoiced as well, as Luke recorded this in Luke 10:21–22, “At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, ‘I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in You...
