Day 2

Scripture to Read: Luke 10:3-4

Jesus described to His seventy disciples what it would be like for them as He sent them to prepare the way for Him. Jesus said in Luke 10:3, “Go; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.” Sending lambs into the midst of wolves seems foolish, but it reminded the disciples that they could not do what Jesus commanded without God’s provision, power, and protection. They could not do this on their own fleshly strength and courage. They had to cling to God, trust in Him, and rely on Him to walk them through every step of the way. It’s the same for us today. We’ve been commanded to make disciples (Matthew 28:19) and to be Christ’s witnesses (Acts 1:8). There is no way we can fulfill the ministry God has called us to fulfill without being filled with His Spirit (Ephesians 5:18) and fully understanding all He’s given us (2 Peter 1:3–11) through His Holy Spirit and through us passionately pursuing our intimacy with Him and His Word daily. Jesus also gave specific commands in Luke 10:4. He wanted His disciples to be laser-focused on the mission at hand, not distracted by material concerns or long-winded greetings. In that day and time, Eastern greetings could be full of fake flattery and feeding men’s fleshly pride. Men who were on a life-or-death mission risked seeming unsociable at times. Jesus knew this, so He told them to get to where they were going and fulfill His plan. We must stay focused to fulfill what God has for us to do.

Challenge & Application

Why can’t we accomplish all that God has commanded us to do without being filled with His Holy Spirit? Why must we remain laser-focused to fulfill all that God has for us each day?

Day 1

Jesus knew He had many more cities to go to in order to fulfill all the Father had sent Him to do as Lord and Savior of all mankind. God had Luke record the following in Luke 10:1–2, “Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. 2 And He was s...

Jesus gave further instructions to His seventy disciples. They were to bring a blessing of peace to each house, if the home would receive it. The disciples were not just bringing a greeting, but they were measuring whether this man and his household were ready to hear the Gospel of Peace. The disciples were carrying the Good News from house t...

Day 4

There came a heavy price for the cities that rejected the seventy messengers and their message. Jesus told the seventy in Luke 10:10–11, “But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, tha...

Day 5

Jesus laid out some pretty heavy words in Luke 10:16, “The one who listens to you listens to Me, and the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.” As Jesus spoke to the seventy disciples, He told them that the message He gave them to share carried as much weight as if Jesus Himself were delivering the...

The seventy had returned, and God had Luke record this about their arrival in Luke 10:17–20: “The seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.’ 18 And He said to them, ‘I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, an...

Day 7

Jesus definitely rejoiced as well, as Luke recorded this in Luke 10:21–22, “At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, ‘I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in You...
