Scripture to Read: Luke 10:10-15
There came a heavy price for the cities that rejected the seventy messengers and their message. Jesus told the seventy in Luke 10:10–11, “But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’” Jesus wanted to make sure that the people of those cities knew the heavy price of rejecting Him and His kingdom. In the days of our Lord, the cities of Sodom, Tyre, and Sidon were more sinful than most cities of that day. Jesus made it clear that any city that chose to reject His message brought to them by any of the seventy would be held to a higher level of accountability before God than Sodom, Tyre, and Sidon. The reason was that through the seventy, God performed a greater work than any of those sinful cities had ever seen. So, because they saw God’s miraculous power firsthand and still chose to reject Christ as the One True Messiah, they would be held to a higher accountability before God. People, especially in the USA today, are going to be held to a higher level of accountability for the numerous times that they have heard God’s truth and seen Him move. Jesus also mentioned Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum because they had all seen such incredible miracles performed in their cities but still refused to believe in Christ as Lord.
Challenge & Application
Why is it important for us to understand that God holds everyone accountable for what He has revealed to them about Himself?
How are you responding each day to what God has already revealed to you about Himself?
