Day 5

Scripture to Read: Colossians 1:21

Sometimes it’s important to remember what Christ has saved us from so that we fully appreciate the incredible gift of His love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and restoration that He has and continually gives to us. We read in Colossians 1:21, “And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds.” The description in Colossians 1:21 is pretty sad, but one that reminds us of who we were without Christ. God tells us through Paul that we used to be totally void of God and that our minds were actually hostile toward God. God had Paul write it this way in Ephesians 2:1–3: “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.” We may not like to think of ourselves in this light, but that is who we were before Christ (through His Holy Spirit) came to live in us. This is also a good reminder that these scriptures describe the state that all lost people are still trapped in. We may not look at lost people this way, but we need to so that we see the urgency of telling them about Christ so they can be set free.

Challenge & Application

What was our life like before we surrendered to Christ as Lord? How does God’s Word today help you see the reality for each lost soul on this earth?

Day 1

God loves us so much that He came in the Person of Jesus, revealing Himself in bodily form, and He laid down His life for the entire human race. God led Paul to describe our Lord Jesus Christ to the believers in Colossae in Colossians 1:15–20. We read in Colossians 1:15, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.” G...

Day 2

When we consider God’s creation, it is magnificent and truly displays God’s power, glory, and majesty. We read in Psalm 19:1, “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” Then, we also read in Isaiah 6:3, “And one called out to another and said, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts, t...

Day 3

God is eternal; therefore, He has no beginning and there will never be an end to Him. God had Paul write it this way in Colossians 1:17: “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” It’s hard for us to imagine God having always been, because we live by time. We measure our days, weeks, months, and years by time. We wear a w...

Day 4

God the Father, Son, and Spirit are Three but also One. We read in Colossians 1:19, “For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him.” God the Father was pleased for all of His fullness, all of His perfection, all of His powers, and all of His attributes to permanently live in Christ the Son. When Jesus came to eart...

Day 6

We know what we used to be, but now that we’ve surrendered to Christ, we’re different. God had Paul write this in Colossians 1:22: “yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach.” God reminds us that Christ Himself reconciled us (reunited us, brought ...

Day 7

Many people hear the Gospel of Christ and are initially excited about being saved from their sin. But the sad news is that many never truly surrender to Christ because they are unwilling to die to themselves and live fully for Christ. God had Paul give a warning as we read in Colossians 1:23, “if indeed you continue in the faith firmly establ...
