Scripture to Read: Colossians 1:17–18
God is eternal; therefore, He has no beginning and there will never be an end to Him. God had Paul write it this way in Colossians 1:17: “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” It’s hard for us to imagine God having always been, because we live by time. We measure our days, weeks, months, and years by time. We wear a watch or we carry our cell phone so we know what time it is. We all have a birthday, and unless the Lord returns for His bride before we die, we will all have our last day here on earth and we will leave the current body we inhabit behind. Not only is our Lord eternal, but He also is the One Who controls the entire universe and holds it all together. He is the One who created gravity so that we are able to live on earth and not just float away into space. We can rest and trust in Him and His incredible power because He is mightily at work in us (Philippians 2:13) because we belong to Him. We are His church. God had Paul write this in Colossians 1:18: “He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.” We, as followers of Christ, make up His body (Ephesians 1:22–23, Ephesians 4:15–16, Colossians 1:24, Colossians 2:19). Since Christ is the Head, we must submit to and obey Him daily.
Challenge & Application
Why is it hard for us to understand eternity, and how does time distort our view of eternity?
Since Christ is the Head of His church, what does that mean for us as Christians?
