Day 4

Scripture to Read: Romans 3:29

It is not hard to imagine one set of people thinking of themselves as being better than another. We see this in our world every day. The same was true when God had Paul write to all of the saints in Rome (Romans 1:7). The Jews considered themselves to be much better than the Gentiles. The Jews saw themselves as God’s people and the Gentiles as nothing but reprobates, doomed for an eternal existence separated from God. The Jews believed that because they were born a Jew, they would be in heaven when they died because they were God’s chosen people. So God had Paul ask this question in Romans 3:29, “Or is God the God of Jews only?” Any Jew reading this question for the first time probably would have said, “Of course, God is only God of the Jews.” But then God has Paul ask this question in Romans 3:29, “Is He not the God of Gentiles also?” Many Jews would have answered this second question with a resounding, “No, God is definitely not God of the Gentiles.” Why would Jews think that they alone were God’s people? Why would Jews believe that every other nation was doomed to eternal separation from God? Because the Jews had misinterpreted God’s call upon their lives. God chose the nation of Israel to be His people, but God chose them to be salt and light to all other nations so they would know God as the Jews did. As Christians, God has called us to be salt and light to all who are lost. We must not miss God’s call.

Challenge & Application

Why did the Jews believe that they were the only ones going to heaven and that everyone else was doomed to hell? How are you being salt and light to those around you who are still lost in their sins?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As we ended the devotions last week, we saw how God demonstrated His righteousness through Christ. Therefore, God made Christ our “Justifier,” which means that Christ is the only one who could and still can make us and everyone else right before God the Father by thoroughly cleansing us of all our sins (Colossians 1:13–14, Colossians 2:13–14)...

Day 2

It is overwhelmingly humbling when we consider all Christ has done for us through His life, crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection. Christ gave His all so we could be made right with God the Father. So, as God used Paul to write His Word, God had Paul write in Romans 3:28, “For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from wor...

Day 3

Yesterday, we touched on the fact that our “good works” are the evidence to others that we belong to Christ and that He is Lord of our lives. So, let’s examine our “good works” a little more. God had James, who grew up as the half-brother of Jesus, deal with how important our “good works” are in showing others we belong to Christ. In James 2:...

Day 5

Yesterday, we began to examine how the Jews had missed God’s call because they believed God had only chosen them as His people and no one else. As Christians, if we are not careful, we can start thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought because we know we belong to God through Christ. God had Paul write this in Romans 12:3 as a reminder...

Day 6

We now know that our faith was given to us by God, who created us all. We also know that God has given that same faith to everyone who does not know Him yet. Those still separated from Christ have chosen to use the faith given to them by God to trust in someone or something else. As God had Paul write, we see today that God had Paul tell us, ...

Day 7

We end this week with Romans 3:31. God has taught us much about Himself and that His salvation is for everyone, not just the Jews. God has Paul finishing up Romans 3 by asking a question and then answering that same question in Romans 3:31, “Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.” The...
