Day 1

Scripture to Read: Romans 3:27

As we ended the devotions last week, we saw how God demonstrated His righteousness through Christ. Therefore, God made Christ our “Justifier,” which means that Christ is the only one who could and still can make us and everyone else right before God the Father by thoroughly cleansing us of all our sins (Colossians 1:13–14, Colossians 2:13–14). So, God had Paul ask this in Romans 3:27, “Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works?” God had Paul ask these questions because the Jews of Paul's day boasted that since they were of the line of Abraham, they automatically were part of God's family. Likewise, many people today boast about “praying a prayer” and getting baptized. But no one has anything to brag about except our Lord Jesus Christ and His death, burial, and resurrection from the dead. God had Paul say it this way in Galatians 6:14, “But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” God’s Word has cross-references that help us see how all of God’s Word beautifully ties together. So, God had Paul respond to the questions in Romans 3:27 by writing this answer, “No, but by a law of faith.” So, God has not given us His favor, grace, mercy, kindness, or forgiveness based on anything we have done. But God has given us all these things because we have placed our faith in Christ as Lord.

Challenge & Application

Why doesn’t anyone have anything to boast about when it comes to God’s favor being poured out on them? How are you living your life differently, knowing that you have all of God’s favor and forgiveness because of Christ in you?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 2

It is overwhelmingly humbling when we consider all Christ has done for us through His life, crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection. Christ gave His all so we could be made right with God the Father. So, as God used Paul to write His Word, God had Paul write in Romans 3:28, “For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from wor...

Day 3

Yesterday, we touched on the fact that our “good works” are the evidence to others that we belong to Christ and that He is Lord of our lives. So, let’s examine our “good works” a little more. God had James, who grew up as the half-brother of Jesus, deal with how important our “good works” are in showing others we belong to Christ. In James 2:...

Day 4

It is not hard to imagine one set of people thinking of themselves as being better than another. We see this in our world every day. The same was true when God had Paul write to all of the saints in Rome (Romans 1:7). The Jews considered themselves to be much better than the Gentiles. The Jews saw themselves as God’s people and the Gentiles a...

Day 5

Yesterday, we began to examine how the Jews had missed God’s call because they believed God had only chosen them as His people and no one else. As Christians, if we are not careful, we can start thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought because we know we belong to God through Christ. God had Paul write this in Romans 12:3 as a reminder...

Day 6

We now know that our faith was given to us by God, who created us all. We also know that God has given that same faith to everyone who does not know Him yet. Those still separated from Christ have chosen to use the faith given to them by God to trust in someone or something else. As God had Paul write, we see today that God had Paul tell us, ...

Day 7

We end this week with Romans 3:31. God has taught us much about Himself and that His salvation is for everyone, not just the Jews. God has Paul finishing up Romans 3 by asking a question and then answering that same question in Romans 3:31, “Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.” The...
