Scripture to Read: Revelation 3:15-16
We continue our walk through Revelation 3:14-22. We know the church at Laodicea was “lukewarm” and had become useless to the Master’s service, all the while thinking they were fine. The city of Laodicea was abundantly rich from the world's point of view, so they thought they needed nothing. Being rich with this world's goods is not bad as long as those riches do not rule and reign our lives. The church in Laodicea had fallen prey to trusting in their worldly wealth. Jesus told them this in Revelation 3:17, “Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked,” We, as Believers, know the things of this world will NEVER meet our needs, but the church at Laodicea thought they required nothing, including no longer being dependent on our Lord Jesus Christ. If we do not guard against desiring the stuff of this world to meet our needs, we too can fall into the trap of thinking because we have stuff that we do not need God and His Word. We can become arrogant, prideful, and trust in our stuff and no longer trust totally in God. Jesus tells the church in Laodicea, “you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked,” The church had no clue they were wretched, poor, blind, miserable, and naked. We’ll unpack this more tomorrow. For now, let’s consider our own spiritual lives according to what we’ve learned today.
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about trusting in the stuff of this world over trusting completely in Him?
2. How are you guarding against hungering and thirsting for world wealth, but instead hungering and thirsting for God and His Word?
