Day 2

Scripture to Read: Revelation 3:15-16

Yesterday we saw how our Lord Jesus Christ introduced Himself. After Christ’s introduction, He lets the church at Laodicea know that He knows their works and He rebuked them for being apathetic towards Him. The problem with the people in Laodicea was that they dishonored God by honoring false “gods.” Jesus calls them “lukewarm.” This is the strongest rebuke given by our Lord to the seven churches. To understand Jesus’ illustration, we need to know a few things. The city of Hieropolis was seven miles north of Laodicea and was known for its hot springs. Around 10 miles south of Laodicea, the city of Colosse was known for its cold waters, which were pure and drinkable. Laodicea tried to pipe in the hot springs from Hieropolis but the water was lukewarm when it traveled the seven-mile distance. The water was also dirty and impure once it reached Laodicea. Jesus used the water as an excellent illustration as to the condition of the church of Laodicea. Hot and cold water are both valuable. Hot water brings healing to the body and helps cleanse the body of impurities. Cold water refreshes the body that is weary and thirsty. As believers, we can be hot or cold to be used by our Lord. Christ, through us, brings cleansing to the impure soul and refreshment to the dry and weary soul but the church in Laodicea was neither. Jesus saw them as neither fit for healing or drinking. Jesus revealed their uselessness, just like their water was useless. May we indeed be hot or cold for our Lord.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about hot water, cold water and lukewarm water? 2. How are you striving to live hot or cold for our Lord each day?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We are on the last of the seven churches that Jesus wrote to in Revelation 2 & 3. This week we see all that our Lord had to say to the church of Laodicea. Just so we are aware, the letter in Revelation 3:14-22 was written to the church in Laodicea (Laodicea was an important, wealthy city with a significant Jewish population). Our Lord Jesus C...

Day 3

We saw yesterday the usefulness of hot and cold water and the uselessness of lukewarm water. Because the church in Laodicea was “lukewarm,” Jesus told them He would spit them out of His mouth. When we are “lukewarm” we become useless, just like lukewarm water is useless to most people. The church at Corinth had become “fleshly” and was rebuke...

Day 4

We continue our walk through Revelation 3:14-22. We know the church at Laodicea was “lukewarm” and had become useless to the Master’s service, all the while thinking they were fine. The city of Laodicea was abundantly rich from the world's point of view, so they thought they needed nothing. Being rich with this world's goods is not bad as lon...

Day 5

As we ended yesterday’s devotion, God taught us how the church in Laodicea was wretched, poor, blind, miserable, and naked. Jesus calls everyone who calls themselves a Christian to be fully SOLD OUT to Him. Jesus said it like this in Luke 9:23, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me...

Day 6

As we read Revelation 3:19, we see that Jesus also tells the church at Laodicea that He disciplines those He loves. God also makes this truth clear in Hebrews 12:6-8, “For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, and He scourges every son whom He receives.” 7 It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son...

Day 7

We end with a beautiful invitation from our Lord Jesus Christ. The invitation from our Lord is not just for the church at Laodicea, but His invitation is to everyone who needs Him. The beauty of our Lord is that He knocks continually on the door of each person’s heart so that those who do not know Him will come to know Him, and those of us wh...
