Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 8:14

We continue our walk through God’s Holy Word, and today we focus on another soil (another heart) that the Word of God is cast upon. Jesus explains to us, in Luke 8:14, that the seed that fell among the thorns represents people who have heard the Word of God but then the worries, riches, and pleasure of this life choke out the Word. Because the junk of this world has choked out the Word, the Word does not bring about mature fruit in that person’s life. God knows we face struggles every day, but He also knows He has given us Himself, through His Holy Spirit in us, to overcome those struggles. God knows we struggle with anxiousness, that is why He tells us in Philippians 4:6 NOT to be anxious about anything but that we must pray, with an attitude of thanksgiving. As we pray and lay our anxiousness before our Lord, He gives us His perfect peace, as promised in Philippians 4:7. God also knows that our flesh (Romans 6:12-14; Galatians 5:16-21; James 1:13-16; 1 John 2:15-17) hungers for the junk of this world and that the garbage of this world distracts us from bearing fruit for Him. We must willingly crucify our fleshly desires daily and not be deceived by the momentary pleasures this world offers us. God wants us to willingly long for Him and His Word so that the fertile soil of our heart is not producing weeds but producing His fruit for His glory and honor.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about getting the weeds out of your life so you can bear fruit for Him? 2. What will you do differently in your daily schedule to make sure you are passionately pursuing Christ and His Word every day?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Our Lord Jesus Christ spoke in parables throughout His earthly ministry. The dictionary defines a parable as “a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels.” This definition is simplistic, but Jesus used parables to teach His Word so we would understand how to love Him, obey Him, and live for H...

Day 2

Jesus had crowds coming to Him for most of His earthly ministry. Some people came to Jesus because they needed to be healed or had someone close to them who needed to be healed. Other people came to Jesus because they were moved by His teaching and wanted to hear more. Other people came to Jesus because they heard about His miracles and wante...

Day 3

Over these next four devotions, we will focus each day on one of the areas upon which the seed fell. Today our focus is on the seed that fell by the side of the road. Jesus first explains in Luke 8:11 that the “seed” represents the Word of God. Some things we already know about the Word of God is that His Word is alive, powerful, sharper than...

Day 4

The devotion today focuses on the seed that fell on rocky/shallow soil. The seed (God’s Word) grew quickly in this person, but it did not last because the seed did not have a firm root in this person’s heart to be able to live. The soil was too shallow for the Word to form deep roots. Jesus explains in Luke 8:13 that the rocky/shallow soil re...

Day 6

God has designed us for relationship with Him, with others, and for us to bear fruit for Him daily. God reminds us that He has created us to bear fruit for Him by engaging in His work, His good deeds (Ephesians 2:10, Titus 3:8, Titus 3:14). Today we read in Luke 8:15 that when God’s Word (the seed) fell on good soil (a good heart that holds o...

Day 7

We have examined four different soils this week, and we have seen how we must continually pursue Christ and His Word in order to be fruitful. We know God’s Word is more wonderful and powerful than anything this world can offer us. God’s Word revives us (Psalms 119:50). God’s Word is better than any earthly treasure (Psalms 119:72). God’s Word...
