Scripture to Read: Luke 8:11-12
Over these next four devotions, we will focus each day on one of the areas upon which the seed fell. Today our focus is on the seed that fell by the side of the road. Jesus first explains in Luke 8:11 that the “seed” represents the Word of God. Some things we already know about the Word of God is that His Word is alive, powerful, sharper than any double-edged sword, and God’s Word judges the thoughts and intentions of our hearts (Hebrews 4:12). God’s Word also is what God uses, through our Lord Jesus Christ, to save us and produce life in us (1 Peter 1:23). So, as the Word of God is preached and taught, people hear the Word, but not all receive the Word the same way. The seed that fell by the side of the road represents those who hear the Word of God, but the devil comes and snatches the Word from the heart of that person. Jesus says it this way in Matthew 13:19, “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road.” These are people who never fully receive the Word of God. These people only hear God’s Word with their ears, but their heart is never changed. The god of this world still has these lost people blinded (2 Corinthians 4:3-4).
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about His Word and the first place the seed fell?
2. How has what you have learned help you better understand why some people just don’t get it when we share God’s Truth?
