Day 2

Scripture to Read: Luke 8:4-10

Jesus had crowds coming to Him for most of His earthly ministry. Some people came to Jesus because they needed to be healed or had someone close to them who needed to be healed. Other people came to Jesus because they were moved by His teaching and wanted to hear more. Other people came to Jesus because they heard about His miracles and wanted to see more, almost like wanting to see a show. Whatever the reason, people came to Jesus and He would challenge them through His preaching and teaching. As we read Luke 8:4-10, we read the parable of the sower and the seed. We learn how the sower cast his seed, and the seed fell in four different places. Some seed fell by the side of the road and the birds ate that seed. Some seed fell on rocky, shallow soil, and it grew up quickly but did not last because it did not have the water it needed to live. Some seed fell among the weeds, and the weeds killed the good seed as it grew because the weeds were able to choke out the good seed. Finally, some seed landed onto good soil and produced an abundance of fruit. To understand God and His Word, we must have His Spirit living in us (John 14:26, John 16:13, 1 Corinthians 2:12, 1 Thessalonians 4:9, 1 John 2:20, 1 John 2:27). We must choose to hunger for Christ and His Word (1 Peter 1:2-3).

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about knowing and understanding His Word? 2. How will you choose to hunger and thirst for Christ and His Word each day this week?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Our Lord Jesus Christ spoke in parables throughout His earthly ministry. The dictionary defines a parable as “a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels.” This definition is simplistic, but Jesus used parables to teach His Word so we would understand how to love Him, obey Him, and live for H...

Day 3

Over these next four devotions, we will focus each day on one of the areas upon which the seed fell. Today our focus is on the seed that fell by the side of the road. Jesus first explains in Luke 8:11 that the “seed” represents the Word of God. Some things we already know about the Word of God is that His Word is alive, powerful, sharper than...

Day 4

The devotion today focuses on the seed that fell on rocky/shallow soil. The seed (God’s Word) grew quickly in this person, but it did not last because the seed did not have a firm root in this person’s heart to be able to live. The soil was too shallow for the Word to form deep roots. Jesus explains in Luke 8:13 that the rocky/shallow soil re...

Day 5

We continue our walk through God’s Holy Word, and today we focus on another soil (another heart) that the Word of God is cast upon. Jesus explains to us, in Luke 8:14, that the seed that fell among the thorns represents people who have heard the Word of God but then the worries, riches, and pleasure of this life choke out the Word. Because th...

Day 6

God has designed us for relationship with Him, with others, and for us to bear fruit for Him daily. God reminds us that He has created us to bear fruit for Him by engaging in His work, His good deeds (Ephesians 2:10, Titus 3:8, Titus 3:14). Today we read in Luke 8:15 that when God’s Word (the seed) fell on good soil (a good heart that holds o...

Day 7

We have examined four different soils this week, and we have seen how we must continually pursue Christ and His Word in order to be fruitful. We know God’s Word is more wonderful and powerful than anything this world can offer us. God’s Word revives us (Psalms 119:50). God’s Word is better than any earthly treasure (Psalms 119:72). God’s Word...
