Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 8:13

The devotion today focuses on the seed that fell on rocky/shallow soil. The seed (God’s Word) grew quickly in this person, but it did not last because the seed did not have a firm root in this person’s heart to be able to live. The soil was too shallow for the Word to form deep roots. Jesus explains in Luke 8:13 that the rocky/shallow soil represents people who hear God’s Word and initially receive God’s Word with great joy. Christians who never dive deep into their intimacy with Christ and His Word remain shallow in their walk and fleshly in their actions. God, through Paul, in 1 Corinthians 3:1-3, speaks of Christians being “infants in Christ” who never get beyond the “milk” of the Word of God but instead live fleshly. We read in Luke 8 that the person receives the Word joyfully, but their life is shallow in Christ, and they live more by their feelings than by God’s Truth. When the tests and trials of this life come to this person, the Word simply withers away because of their lack of spiritual maturity (Matthew 13:20). But, for growing Christians, God uses the tests, trials, and struggles of this life to strengthen our faith in Him (James 1:2-4). As Christians, if we are pursuing Christ and His Word daily, our faith in Christ will be deep. But, if our life is not deeply rooted in Christ, then the tests, trials, and especially the temptations will pull us away, revealing our spiritual immaturity.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about the rocky/shallow soil? 2. Who will you share Christ with this week knowing they need to be firmly rooted in Him?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Our Lord Jesus Christ spoke in parables throughout His earthly ministry. The dictionary defines a parable as “a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels.” This definition is simplistic, but Jesus used parables to teach His Word so we would understand how to love Him, obey Him, and live for H...

Day 2

Jesus had crowds coming to Him for most of His earthly ministry. Some people came to Jesus because they needed to be healed or had someone close to them who needed to be healed. Other people came to Jesus because they were moved by His teaching and wanted to hear more. Other people came to Jesus because they heard about His miracles and wante...

Day 3

Over these next four devotions, we will focus each day on one of the areas upon which the seed fell. Today our focus is on the seed that fell by the side of the road. Jesus first explains in Luke 8:11 that the “seed” represents the Word of God. Some things we already know about the Word of God is that His Word is alive, powerful, sharper than...

Day 5

We continue our walk through God’s Holy Word, and today we focus on another soil (another heart) that the Word of God is cast upon. Jesus explains to us, in Luke 8:14, that the seed that fell among the thorns represents people who have heard the Word of God but then the worries, riches, and pleasure of this life choke out the Word. Because th...

Day 6

God has designed us for relationship with Him, with others, and for us to bear fruit for Him daily. God reminds us that He has created us to bear fruit for Him by engaging in His work, His good deeds (Ephesians 2:10, Titus 3:8, Titus 3:14). Today we read in Luke 8:15 that when God’s Word (the seed) fell on good soil (a good heart that holds o...

Day 7

We have examined four different soils this week, and we have seen how we must continually pursue Christ and His Word in order to be fruitful. We know God’s Word is more wonderful and powerful than anything this world can offer us. God’s Word revives us (Psalms 119:50). God’s Word is better than any earthly treasure (Psalms 119:72). God’s Word...
