Day 6

Scripture to Read: John 8:21–24

Jesus never backed away from His Truth but always confronted sin head-on, lovingly challenging those lost in their sins. In John 8:21, Jesus said to the Pharisees, “I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” There is no doubt that Jesus was letting them know He would be going back to heaven but that they would never make it there in their current sinful state. Jesus even told them that they’d die in their sin. It is still true today that those who choose not to walk with Jesus here on earth will never walk with Him in heaven. But those who surrender to Christ as Lord here on earth will one day live with Him in heaven. Of course, the Jews who heard what Jesus said missed that He said they would die in their sin because their response says it all. The Jews’ response in John 8:22 was this, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” All they heard was that they couldn’t go where He was going. They thought Jesus was talking about going to Hades because the Jews believed that the lowest point of Hades was reserved for those who committed suicide. Their spiritual blindness is so evident here in God’s Word. But Jesus sought to open their eyes in John 8:23–24 by clarifying that He was from above and they were not and unless they placed their faith in Him, they would die in their sins.

Challenge & Application

• What does Jesus never do, and why is it so important for us to imitate Him as we walk with Him? • Why did the people miss what Jesus said, and why do people still miss it today?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus used a lot of descriptive language in the Book of John as He described Himself. Each description gives us a glimpse into Who our King and Lord is. Jesus said this of Himself as He spoke to the Pharisees in John 8:12, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” Christ i...

Day 2

Since Jesus is the “Light of the world,” we must allow Him to shine through us every day in this very dark world. After Jesus had declared Himself to be the Light of the world, the Pharisees challenged Him. The Pharisees said to Jesus in John 8:13, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true.” The Pharisees thought that Jes...

Day 3

The Pharisees had no idea they were challenging God the Son, the One who created them. As was discussed yesterday, the Pharisees were blinded by the darkness of their hearts. Jesus answered the Pharisees’ challenge in John 8:14, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you d...

Day 4

Though Jesus did not come to judge the world, because we know instead that He came to save the world (John 3:17), Jesus still had every right to judge the world. Jesus made that clear to the Pharisees in John 8:16, “But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.” Jesus told the Pharise...

Day 5

The Pharisees were unsatisfied with Jesus’ answer, so they questioned Him in John 8:19 and said, “Where is Your Father?” This question would have been a direct slander against Jesus and His earthly family. The Pharisees would have known about His virgin birth and, no doubt, they did not believe it actually happened, so to question where His F...

Day 7

After Jesus told the Jews a second time that they would die in their sins, here is how they responded in John 8:25, “Who are You?” That was all they could say, “Who are You?” So, Jesus lovingly rebuked them for even asking the question, for He told them, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning?” When Jesus’ ministry went public, He...
