Scripture to Read: John 8:19–20
The Pharisees were unsatisfied with Jesus’ answer, so they questioned Him in John 8:19 and said, “Where is Your Father?” This question would have been a direct slander against Jesus and His earthly family. The Pharisees would have known about His virgin birth and, no doubt, they did not believe it actually happened, so to question where His Father was would have been a backhanded slap against Jesus. Jesus, though, was quick to respond and told them, “You know neither Me nor My Father; if you knew Me, you would know My Father also.” Though the Pharisees thought they had something over on Jesus, Jesus made it clear to them that they knew nothing about Him or His Father. That is the problem with the world today. Everyone decides to define Jesus the way they want to define Him. Some say that Jesus was a great prophet, others say Jesus was a great teacher, and others say Jesus was a good and caring man. But unless we define Jesus according to God’s Holy Word, all other definitions or descriptions will fall short of Who Jesus is. We must know Him, and in knowing Him, we know our Heavenly Father. Our Lord came to us so there would be no more confusion about Him and His love for us. But the god of this world continues to set spiritual landmines to keep people blinded to who our Lord Jesus Christ is and why He came (2 Corinthians 4:3–4). We must also be diligent to daily pursue our fellowship with Him and His Word so that we have no uncertainty.
Challenge & Application
• Why are so many still confused and uncertain about who Jesus is and what He came to do for them?
• How do we stay guarded against doubts and uncertainty about our Lord?
