Day 4

Scripture to Read: John 8:16–18

Though Jesus did not come to judge the world, because we know instead that He came to save the world (John 3:17), Jesus still had every right to judge the world. Jesus made that clear to the Pharisees in John 8:16, “But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.” Jesus told the Pharisees that He had more than just Himself testifying to all He had said, for He told them that the Father and He both testify to what He proclaimed. God the Father was in complete agreement with God the Son, which meant God’s Law was fulfilled. That’s why Jesus told the Pharisees in John 8:17, “Even in your law it has been written that the testimony of two men is true.” Jesus reminded the Pharisees that in the Law of God, written by Moses, if two men agreed on a testimony then the testimony was true. Then, Jesus added just a little more for clarification, for He told them in John 8:18, “I am He who testifies about Myself, and the Father who sent Me testifies about Me.” Jesus made sure there was no confusion in that His testimony about Himself was the exact testimony God the Father had about His Son. Jesus knew He was God in the flesh, and He was secure in His relationship with God the Father. We must be secure in our relationship with God the Father, through Christ, to be the bold witnesses God has called us to be.

Challenge & Application

• Why did Jesus have every right to judge the world and still has that right today? • How do we know that we belong to God the Father and that our testimony is true? Find Scriptures to support your answer.

Day 1

Jesus used a lot of descriptive language in the Book of John as He described Himself. Each description gives us a glimpse into Who our King and Lord is. Jesus said this of Himself as He spoke to the Pharisees in John 8:12, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” Christ i...

Day 2

Since Jesus is the “Light of the world,” we must allow Him to shine through us every day in this very dark world. After Jesus had declared Himself to be the Light of the world, the Pharisees challenged Him. The Pharisees said to Jesus in John 8:13, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true.” The Pharisees thought that Jes...

Day 3

The Pharisees had no idea they were challenging God the Son, the One who created them. As was discussed yesterday, the Pharisees were blinded by the darkness of their hearts. Jesus answered the Pharisees’ challenge in John 8:14, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you d...

Day 5

The Pharisees were unsatisfied with Jesus’ answer, so they questioned Him in John 8:19 and said, “Where is Your Father?” This question would have been a direct slander against Jesus and His earthly family. The Pharisees would have known about His virgin birth and, no doubt, they did not believe it actually happened, so to question where His F...

Day 6

Jesus never backed away from His Truth but always confronted sin head-on, lovingly challenging those lost in their sins. In John 8:21, Jesus said to the Pharisees, “I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” There is no doubt that Jesus was letting them know He would be going back to heaven ...

Day 7

After Jesus told the Jews a second time that they would die in their sins, here is how they responded in John 8:25, “Who are You?” That was all they could say, “Who are You?” So, Jesus lovingly rebuked them for even asking the question, for He told them, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning?” When Jesus’ ministry went public, He...
