Day 2

Scripture to Read: John 8:13

Since Jesus is the “Light of the world,” we must allow Him to shine through us every day in this very dark world. After Jesus had declared Himself to be the Light of the world, the Pharisees challenged Him. The Pharisees said to Jesus in John 8:13, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true.” The Pharisees thought that Jesus was speaking on His own and that there was no one else to testify of what He declared about Himself. They believed that Jesus couldn’t prove Himself to be the Light because as far as they could see, Jesus didn’t have the witnesses to prove His claim to be the Light of the world. The reason the Pharisees could not see was because they were blinded by the darkness of their hearts and, of course, their love for the darkness (John 3:19–20). The fact is, light does not need to be proven, for as light shines, it is seen by all who are not blind and that is proof enough. But those who are blind can’t see the light, so they ask for more proof, though none is needed. So, since the Pharisees’ hearts were blinded by darkness, they felt empowered to challenge Jesus’ claim to be the Light of the world. God reminds us, as Christians, in Ephesians 5:11, Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them. Since Christ lives in us, we should no longer linger in the darkness. God wants us to expose the darkness so that our lives shine brightly for Him.

Challenge & Application

• What was the Pharisees’ problem, and why could they not see that Christ is the Light of the world? • Why does God not want us lingering in the darkness as His children?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus used a lot of descriptive language in the Book of John as He described Himself. Each description gives us a glimpse into Who our King and Lord is. Jesus said this of Himself as He spoke to the Pharisees in John 8:12, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” Christ i...

Day 3

The Pharisees had no idea they were challenging God the Son, the One who created them. As was discussed yesterday, the Pharisees were blinded by the darkness of their hearts. Jesus answered the Pharisees’ challenge in John 8:14, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you d...

Day 4

Though Jesus did not come to judge the world, because we know instead that He came to save the world (John 3:17), Jesus still had every right to judge the world. Jesus made that clear to the Pharisees in John 8:16, “But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.” Jesus told the Pharise...

Day 5

The Pharisees were unsatisfied with Jesus’ answer, so they questioned Him in John 8:19 and said, “Where is Your Father?” This question would have been a direct slander against Jesus and His earthly family. The Pharisees would have known about His virgin birth and, no doubt, they did not believe it actually happened, so to question where His F...

Day 6

Jesus never backed away from His Truth but always confronted sin head-on, lovingly challenging those lost in their sins. In John 8:21, Jesus said to the Pharisees, “I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” There is no doubt that Jesus was letting them know He would be going back to heaven ...

Day 7

After Jesus told the Jews a second time that they would die in their sins, here is how they responded in John 8:25, “Who are You?” That was all they could say, “Who are You?” So, Jesus lovingly rebuked them for even asking the question, for He told them, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning?” When Jesus’ ministry went public, He...
