Day 3

Scripture to Read: John 8:14–15

The Pharisees had no idea they were challenging God the Son, the One who created them. As was discussed yesterday, the Pharisees were blinded by the darkness of their hearts. Jesus answered the Pharisees’ challenge in John 8:14, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.” Jesus was more than qualified to testify about Himself, for Jesus did not only proclaim the Truth, but He is “the Truth,” so there’s no doubt His testimony is true. Jesus also told the Pharisees of His omniscience (being all-knowing), for He knows all things past, present, and future. That is why Jesus told them He knew where He had come from and where He was going. Jesus also said, in John 8:15, “You judge according to the flesh; I am not judging anyone.” The Pharisees could only see Jesus as a man from Galilee and nothing more, so their judgment was based on Jesus’ fleshly birth, which is how they judged Him. But Jesus reminded them that He was not judging anyone, including them. Remember what Jesus had told Nicodemus in John 3:17, “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” Jesus had come to set them free from their spiritual blindness and save them if they were only willing to open their eyes to see Him clearly.

Challenge & Application

• Why was Jesus more than qualified to testify about Himself? • Why couldn’t the Pharisees see Jesus as Messiah, and why were they judging Him according to the flesh?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus used a lot of descriptive language in the Book of John as He described Himself. Each description gives us a glimpse into Who our King and Lord is. Jesus said this of Himself as He spoke to the Pharisees in John 8:12, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” Christ i...

Day 2

Since Jesus is the “Light of the world,” we must allow Him to shine through us every day in this very dark world. After Jesus had declared Himself to be the Light of the world, the Pharisees challenged Him. The Pharisees said to Jesus in John 8:13, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true.” The Pharisees thought that Jes...

Day 4

Though Jesus did not come to judge the world, because we know instead that He came to save the world (John 3:17), Jesus still had every right to judge the world. Jesus made that clear to the Pharisees in John 8:16, “But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.” Jesus told the Pharise...

Day 5

The Pharisees were unsatisfied with Jesus’ answer, so they questioned Him in John 8:19 and said, “Where is Your Father?” This question would have been a direct slander against Jesus and His earthly family. The Pharisees would have known about His virgin birth and, no doubt, they did not believe it actually happened, so to question where His F...

Day 6

Jesus never backed away from His Truth but always confronted sin head-on, lovingly challenging those lost in their sins. In John 8:21, Jesus said to the Pharisees, “I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” There is no doubt that Jesus was letting them know He would be going back to heaven ...

Day 7

After Jesus told the Jews a second time that they would die in their sins, here is how they responded in John 8:25, “Who are You?” That was all they could say, “Who are You?” So, Jesus lovingly rebuked them for even asking the question, for He told them, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning?” When Jesus’ ministry went public, He...
