Day 1

Scripture to Read: John 8:12

Jesus used a lot of descriptive language in the Book of John as He described Himself. Each description gives us a glimpse into Who our King and Lord is. Jesus said this of Himself as He spoke to the Pharisees in John 8:12, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” Christ is our Light; without Him, our spirit is dead and consumed by darkness. Jesus said in Matthew 6:22–23, “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” As Jesus described everyone’s need for Him, we see that if people are open to God’s Truth and look to Him for light, He uses His Truth to fill all those who come to Him with His Light. But, if people choose to walk in darkness, though they think they see, they are blind to His Truth and the darkness fills their lives. Following Jesus means that those who choose to follow Him must fully surrender to Him and His will. Since Christ is Light, He fills every believer with His Holy Spirit so that His Light shines in and through every one of His followers. Choosing light over darkness seems easy, but many still love the darkness instead of the Light (John 3:19–21).

Challenge & Application

• Why do so many people choose the darkness over the Light? • How did you come to realize your need for the Light (Christ), and how are you shining for Him each day?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 2

Since Jesus is the “Light of the world,” we must allow Him to shine through us every day in this very dark world. After Jesus had declared Himself to be the Light of the world, the Pharisees challenged Him. The Pharisees said to Jesus in John 8:13, “You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not true.” The Pharisees thought that Jes...

Day 3

The Pharisees had no idea they were challenging God the Son, the One who created them. As was discussed yesterday, the Pharisees were blinded by the darkness of their hearts. Jesus answered the Pharisees’ challenge in John 8:14, “Even if I testify about Myself, My testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you d...

Day 4

Though Jesus did not come to judge the world, because we know instead that He came to save the world (John 3:17), Jesus still had every right to judge the world. Jesus made that clear to the Pharisees in John 8:16, “But even if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.” Jesus told the Pharise...

Day 5

The Pharisees were unsatisfied with Jesus’ answer, so they questioned Him in John 8:19 and said, “Where is Your Father?” This question would have been a direct slander against Jesus and His earthly family. The Pharisees would have known about His virgin birth and, no doubt, they did not believe it actually happened, so to question where His F...

Day 6

Jesus never backed away from His Truth but always confronted sin head-on, lovingly challenging those lost in their sins. In John 8:21, Jesus said to the Pharisees, “I go away, and you will seek Me, and will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come.” There is no doubt that Jesus was letting them know He would be going back to heaven ...

Day 7

After Jesus told the Jews a second time that they would die in their sins, here is how they responded in John 8:25, “Who are You?” That was all they could say, “Who are You?” So, Jesus lovingly rebuked them for even asking the question, for He told them, “What have I been saying to you from the beginning?” When Jesus’ ministry went public, He...
