Day 4

Scripture to Read: Genesis 2:15-17

In Genesis 2:15-17, God lays out for us man’s role in the garden and what commands He gave that were to be obeyed. Remember that in Genesis 1:28-29, God gave man authority & dominion over all of creation. But we see here that man’s dominion still comes under the authority of God. God gave us authority, but we still answer to Him for what we do with what He’s entrusted to us. God gave man his calling, and God’s call on man’s life was to work in the garden (to watch over it, take care of it, and be in charge of it). Let’s not miss an incredible point here and that point is that God gave us “work” as a GIFT from Him. We will see how work is a gift from God more completely next week when we see that when man sinned, God did not curse “work,” but God cursed the “ground” so that work became hard. BUT, nevertheless, work is what God has called us to do. Also, when we work, we are to do our work, NOT for men but for God because work is a gift from Him. God makes this truth clear here in Colossians 3:23, Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men. God does not just command man to work, but He tells man to “keep it,” which means to defend it or to keep watch over it. Man was to defend his God-created home and God holds man accountable for his work even still today.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you about work today? 2. How are you fulfilling the work God has designed you to do each day?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week we get to walk through the rest of Genesis 2. Despite already discussing man’s creation in Genesis 1, God has Moses (the writer of Genesis) refer back to the creation of man in Genesis 2. We must never forget that ALL of life and creation are a result of God’s handiwork. God has Moses write this in Genesis 2:4 These are the generati...

Day 2

Genesis 2:5-7 brings us to a unique moment in Scripture. Be sure and read it as you walk through this devotion today. We need to make sure we do not miss a few things in Genesis 2:5-7 that God clearly lays out for us. At this point in creation, God had not yet brought rain to the earth. Instead, within the first three days of creation, God us...

Day 3

In Genesis 2:8-14, God gives us the beautiful layout of His perfect design. We see God’s character and creativity displayed here so beautifully. God planted a garden in Eden. Then God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden. Then God “made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.” God’s abundant provi...

Day 5

We did not get a chance to unpack Genesis 2:17 yesterday, so that is where we will be today. As we saw yesterday, we still have a God-given responsibility to work in this life and to take care of all God has entrusted to us. We don’t need to go overboard when it comes to the world in which we live. In other words, there are far too many who h...

Day 6

Today and tomorrow, we’ll finish up with unpacking Genesis 2:18-25. God speaks and clarifies that it was not a good thing for the man to be alone. God has created and specifically designed us for relationship! God wants us to have an incredible living relationship with Him, and He wants us to have relationship with each other. As we read Gene...

Day 7

Marriage is the beautiful picture of God uniting a man and a woman together as one. This union by God is the wonderful picture of Christ and His church. We find this unpacked in Ephesians 5:21-33. In Genesis 2, we see that God clarifies what man must do. In Genesis 2:24, God says, Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold...
