Scripture to Read: Exodus 18:1–12
As we read Exodus 18:1–12, we see that Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, traveled to see Moses and to bring Moses’ wife and sons back to Moses. God’s Word does not tell us when Moses sent his wife and sons back to his father-in-law but most likely, Moses would have sent them before the plagues began or sometime during the plagues as they became more severe in nature. Moses was leading a nation of over two million people. Still, when his father-in-law arrived, “Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and he bowed down and kissed him” (Exodus 18:7). Moses was a great leader, but he humbled himself before his father-in-law and showed him great respect. No matter how highly God exalts us, we must always choose to be humble (James 4:6, James 4:10, 1 Peter 5:6), remembering that God is the one who exalts as we humbly serve Him through the good works (Ephesians 2:10) He has for us to accomplish. Jethro was a priest of Midian, a servant of God. Jethro says in Exodus 18:10–11, “Blessed be the Lord who delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, and who delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that the Lord is greater than all the gods; indeed, it was proven when they dealt proudly against the people.” What a great testimony of our Lord’s work and that no god is like HIM!
Challenge & Application
· Humility is an act of our will—so, how do you choose to humble yourself under the authorities God has placed over you?
· How do you proclaim the works of God to others around you so they may know that He is the One True God?
