Day 5

Scripture to Read: Exodus 17:8–14

It’s interesting, as we study Exodus 17:8–14, that Amalek came against Israel. Remember the praise song of the Israelites in Exodus 15, how the Israelites sang about the surrounding nations in Exodus 15:13–16, “The peoples have heard, they tremble; Anguish has gripped the inhabitants of Philistia. 15 “Then the chiefs of Edom were dismayed; The leaders of Moab, trembling grips them; All the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away. 16 “Terror and dread fall upon them; By the greatness of Your arm they are motionless as stone.” The nations had been gripped with terror due to all our Lord had done to the Egyptians. Nonetheless, Amalek came to battle against the Israelites. In Exodus 17:9, we find Moses speaking to Joshua to assemble a mighty army. This is the first time Joshua is mentioned in God’s Word, but we’ll see how God uses Joshua much more as we study His Word. As we continue in Exodus 17, we read how Aaron and Hur went with Moses to the top of a hill to keep watch on the battlefield. God tells us in Exodus 17:11, “…when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed, and when he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed.” God used Moses in a mighty way, but we see that Moses could not keep his hands up on his own. Moses needed help, so “Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other.” What a great reminder of how much we, as Christians, need each other for the battles we face each day.

Challenge & Application

· Amalek waged war against Israel and, as Christians, we face warfare each day, too; so, whom do you have to support you? · How is God using you to support your Christian friends in the battles they face?

Day 1

God had delivered the Israelites from the Egyptians. Undoubtedly, the Israelites had seen God move mightily and miraculously as He parted the Red Sea and then drowned the entire Egyptian Army in the Red Sea. Today, we read in Exodus 15:22–27 that God had Moses lead the people of Israel for three days into the wilderness. We also read that the...

Day 2

Yesterday, we saw how God miraculously provided Moses with a tree that Moses threw into the water, and the water became sweet to drink. But then God had Moses tell the Israelites this in Exodus 15:26, “If you will give earnest heed to the voice of the Lord your God, and do what is right in His sight, and give ear to His commandments, and keep...

Day 3

We continue our walk through Exodus 16. God provided so abundantly for the nation of Israel. God had Moses tell the Israelites in Exodus 16:8, “This will happen when the Lord gives you meat to eat in the evening, and bread to the full in the morning; for the Lord hears your grumblings which you grumble against Him. And what are we? Your grumb...

Day 4

As we ended Exodus 16:31–35, we learned that the nation of Israel named the bread “manna,” which means “What is it?” based on the question they asked in Exodus 16:15. God provided for the Israelites for forty years (Exodus 16:35). As Awesome as this miracle is, God provided a greater miracle through Himself in the Person of Christ our Lord. E...

Day 6

As we read Exodus 18:1–12, we see that Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, traveled to see Moses and to bring Moses’ wife and sons back to Moses. God’s Word does not tell us when Moses sent his wife and sons back to his father-in-law but most likely, Moses would have sent them before the plagues began or sometime during the pl...

Day 7

As we finish this week, God gives us a great plan for discipleship. We know we are commanded by our Lord (in Matthew 28:18–20) to make disciples of all nations. We also know that making a disciple is not just leading someone to Christ, but it is teaching them how to walk with Christ, know His Word, and help them mature as a follower of Christ...
