Scripture to Read: 1 Timothy 2:2
God continues to challenge us in our prayer lives. As we read 1 Timothy 2:2, we are to specifically pray for all kings and all who are in authority. God does not tell us to pray for those in authority whom we like. God also does not tell us to pray for those in authority we agree with or are Christians. God tells us to pray for all who are in authority. What we need to pray for those in authority is Colossians 4:12, that each person in authority would stand perfect and fully assured in all the will of God. God has called us to pray for those in authority because God has placed them in their authoritative position. God makes this clear in Romans 13:1-2, “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.” So, God wants us not only to submit to the authorities over us, but God wants us to make sure we are praying for them as well. We are to pray for those in authority over us so that we will be able to live peaceful and quiet lives in this world. Also, God wants our lives shining forth for Him by living godly and with honor so that we glorify Him (1 Peter 2:13-17).
