Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 10:30–31
God has Paul ask a great question and then give an incredible answer. We read in 1 Corinthians 10:30–31, “If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered concerning that for which I give thanks? 31 Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” God has already clarified that the meat itself was never a problem and that no one should judge another Christian for eating meat sacrificed to idols as long as it did not cause them or another person to stumble. The freedom that Christ brings to every Christian’s life should only be limited by the love Christ has given us for Him and for others—that is what God reminds us in verse 31: whether we eat or drink or whatever we do, we must do it all to the glory of our incredible God and King. If our every choice brings glory to our Lord, then we will live with a clear and clean conscience before everyone around us. This is similar to what God had Paul write to the Christians in the Colossian church in Colossians 3:17, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” Again, note that whatever we do, whether it’s speaking or doing, all of it must be done in the name of Jesus our Lord and it must all bring glory to God the Father. As Christians, our standard for living is far above what the world would ever do.
