Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 10:28–29
God has clearly shown us that, as Christians, we must engage with lost people to be able to share the love of Christ with them. God used Paul to teach the Christians in Corinth how to live among the lost in their city and how to engage with those who worshipped idols. God had Paul write in 1 Corinthians 10:28–29, “But if anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience’ sake; 29 I mean not your own conscience, but the other man’s; for why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience?” God had Paul clarify that if a Christian went to a non-Christian’s home to eat and that nonbeliever told them the meat they were about to eat had been sacrificed to an idol, then they should not eat it. This would help protect the heart/conscience of the lost person. The reason would be that the lost person would not understand the freedom that the Christian had in Christ and it might confuse the lost person into thinking that Christ was just another type of god and not the one True God. God did not want the lost person to think that they had the right to judge the Christian’s choice. The lost person would have judged them according to their ethics of right and wrong, which were based on a false religion. Additionally, the Christian’s decision not to eat the meat could open a door for them to share how Christ is Lord.
