Scripture to Read: Romans 10:5–8
Today, we see how God used Paul to remind us that no one can keep every part of His perfect Law. In Romans 10:5, God makes it clear that even Moses wrote that anyone who seeks to make themselves right with God by trying to keep His Law and earn their righteousness through the Law would require obeying all of His commands. Again, we are born sinners, so it is an absolute impossibility to keep all of God’s commands. God never leaves us wondering what we should do, but He always provides us with His Good News. So, we read in Romans 10:6–7 that God’s righteousness is based on faith. When we place our faith in Christ as Lord, God’s righteousness puts us in a right relationship with Him. That is why God’s righteousness says, according to Romans 10:6–7, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into Heaven? ’that is, to bring Christ down; 7 or, ‘Who will descend into the abyss? ’that is, to bring Christ up from the dead [as if we had to be saved by our own efforts, doing the impossible].” So, God asks one more question about what His righteousness declares in Romans 10:8, “But what does it say? ‘The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart’—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,” His message is on our lips and in our hearts because He lives in us. Therefore, it is His message of faith in Christ that we live and share.
