Scripture to Read: Romans 5:12
God’s Word is so rich, and God uses His Word in our lives to feed us, guide us, convict us, encourage us, and so much more. We ended last week with the understanding that since we’ve been justified by Christ’s blood, we will be saved from God’s wrath through Christ. We also learned that through Christ, we’ve been reconciled to God the Father and saved from the penalty and power of sin. So, because of all Christ has done for us, we read today in Romans 5:12, “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned.” God reminds us that sin entered the world through Adam. God does not say that sin entered the world through Eve but through Adam. God confirms that sin came into the world through Adam in 1 Corinthians 15:21–22, “For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.” When God says that by Adam “came death,” we know that sin always results in death, but that life comes through Christ alone (Colossians 3:4, John 10:10). God also reminds us in Romans 5:12 that all have sinned. There is not a person who has lived, is living, or will ever live that is not sinful. Christ died for our sins and paid the total price so we could be free from sin's power and penalty.
Challenge & Application
What did we inherit from Adam, and why did death come to everyone?
How are we set free from sin’s power and penalty, and who will you share this good news with this week?
