Scripture to Read: Romans 3:18
Today we finish up the quotes from the Old Testament in Romans 3:10–18. But this last quote from Psalms 36:1 is another strong indictment against the sinfulness of the entire human race. God says in Psalms 36:1, Transgression speaks to the ungodly within his heart; There is no fear of God before his eyes. God states that every human’s sinfulness speaks to them within their heart. In other words, people know they are sinners. However, the problem is stated in the second half of Psalms 36:1. Though mankind’s sinfulness is obvious, the human race chooses to have NO fear of God at all. So, as God had Paul quote Psalms 36:1, God only had Paul quote this in Romans 3:18, “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” With everything else God has already dealt with about mankind’s sinfulness in Romans 3:10–17, God knew that all mankind needed to be reminded of is that there is NO FEAR of HIM. When there is no fear of God, mankind is capable of all sinfulness. As we look at our society today, we see the results of mankind's lack of fear of God. The problem is that this lack of fear of God has crept into believers' lives too. We see and hear of Christians living in such a way that we would think they were lost (1 Corinthians 3:1–3). We must, as Christians, passionately pursue God and His Word (Psalms 119:9–11, 1 Peter 2:1–3, 2 Peter 1:5–9) to stay guarded against sin.
Challenge & Application
· What did you learn about mankind that allows every sin to be committed each day?
· How are you guarding against losing your fear of God and thinking your life is fine just as it is?
