Day 6

Scripture to Read: Revelation 2:10

As we examine our lives, we need to ask ourselves each day if we are living faithfully for our Lord. As we saw yesterday, every believer will receive “the crown of life” as an inheritance from our Lord. We know as Christians that suffering and persecution are promised in this life. We must choose to respond in a way that honors our Lord and not fall prey to giving in to our fleshly weaknesses (whining, complaining, moaning, groaning, feeling sorry for ourselves, having a pity party, etc…). We need to be able to proclaim the words that God had Paul proclaim in Romans 8:18, For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Our Lord has already told us that we should not be surprised when suffering comes our way. He declares this truth again beautifully in 1 Peter 4:12-14, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; 13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. 14 If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. So, our response to persecution and suffering is to “rejoice,” knowing that we are blessed because God’s Spirit lives in us and has sealed us for eternity in Christ

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about your response to suffering and persecution? 2. How are you currently responding to the tests and trials that you face in this life? How does your response honor our Lord?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week we focus on the second of the seven churches that our Lord Jesus Christ spoke to through the Apostle John. This week we examine what our Lord Jesus Christ says to the church at Smyrna and, of course, to us as believers today. Our Lord introduces Himself as follows in Revelation 2:8 “The first and the last, who was dead, and has come...

Day 2

To better understand what our Lord Jesus Christ says to the believers in Smyrna in Revelation 2:9, we must know a few things about the city of Smyrna. Smyrna was a wealthy city located on the Aegean sea. It had a protected harbor and sat at the foot of Mount Pagus. Smyrna was often called a “flower” or “crown” in East Asia because of its beau...

Day 3

We are going to focus again on Revelation 2:9 today. As we saw yesterday, all Christians need to expect that persecution and suffering are going to come. Though we don’t experience persecution and suffering much here in Kentucky or the USA, we have fellow believers worldwide who do face persecution and suffering simply because they are pursui...

Day 4

Knowing our true riches are only found in Christ is critical to living for Christ each day. We know all believers will suffer persecution at the hands of perverse and evil people, even if it has not happened yet. For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing persecution, we need to pray and ask God to deliver them. That is why God led...

Day 5

As we have been walking through the devotions this week, we have seen that persecution and suffering are guaranteed for all believers. God has also revealed that our spiritual battles are not with people but against Satan and all of the spiritual forces of wickedness and darkness. Today we see how Christ called the believers in Smyrna, and is...

Day 7

As we have learned this week, a life that is faithful to Christ to death is a life that will live eternally with Him. On the contrary, a life that is lived apart from Christ is a life that will experience eternal death. As we close out this week, we read in Revelation 2:11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. ...
