Day 1

Scripture to Read: Revelation 2:8

This week we focus on the second of the seven churches that our Lord Jesus Christ spoke to through the Apostle John. This week we examine what our Lord Jesus Christ says to the church at Smyrna and, of course, to us as believers today. Our Lord introduces Himself as follows in Revelation 2:8 “The first and the last, who was dead, and has come to life.” Christ is reminding the believers in Smyrna, and us today, of His shared nature with God the Father. Our Lord is the first and the last which means He is eternal; Christ has always been and will always be. Christ also mentions His redeeming work on the cross, that He died and then defeated death and came back to life. There is no question for us today that Christ is God, but many over the last 2,000 years have doubted if Christ is God. Many still doubt today; that is why there are so many false religions in our world. Christ also confirms He is God in Revelation 1:8, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty,” and also in Revelation 21:6. Our Lord Jesus Christ leaves no doubt, just in these three Scriptures alone, that He is God. Of course, there are so many other verses throughout God’s Word that confirm that Christ is God. Knowing and believing that Christ is God and not just a god, that He died, that He defeated death, hell and sin is foundational to our belief as Christians.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about who Christ is and about the importance of knowing who He is? 2. How are you sharing with others who Christ is, and how has knowing who Christ is given you peace and rest?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 2

To better understand what our Lord Jesus Christ says to the believers in Smyrna in Revelation 2:9, we must know a few things about the city of Smyrna. Smyrna was a wealthy city located on the Aegean sea. It had a protected harbor and sat at the foot of Mount Pagus. Smyrna was often called a “flower” or “crown” in East Asia because of its beau...

Day 3

We are going to focus again on Revelation 2:9 today. As we saw yesterday, all Christians need to expect that persecution and suffering are going to come. Though we don’t experience persecution and suffering much here in Kentucky or the USA, we have fellow believers worldwide who do face persecution and suffering simply because they are pursui...

Day 4

Knowing our true riches are only found in Christ is critical to living for Christ each day. We know all believers will suffer persecution at the hands of perverse and evil people, even if it has not happened yet. For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing persecution, we need to pray and ask God to deliver them. That is why God led...

God has also revealed that our spiritual battles are not with people but against Satan and all of the spiritual forces of wickedness and darkness. Today we see how Christ called the believers in Smyrna, and is...

Day 6

As we examine our lives, we need to ask ourselves each day if we are living faithfully for our Lord. As we saw yesterday, every believer will receive “the crown of life” as an inheritance from our Lord. We know as Christians that suffering and persecution are promised in this life. We must choose to respond in a way that honors our Lord and n...

Day 7

As we have learned this week, a life that is faithful to Christ to death is a life that will live eternally with Him. On the contrary, a life that is lived apart from Christ is a life that will experience eternal death. As we close out this week, we read in Revelation 2:11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. ...
