Day 4

Scripture to Read: Revelation 2:9-10

Knowing our true riches are only found in Christ is critical to living for Christ each day. We know all believers will suffer persecution at the hands of perverse and evil people, even if it has not happened yet. For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing persecution, we need to pray and ask God to deliver them. That is why God led Paul to ask the believers in Thessalonica to pray in 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2, Finally, brethren, pray for us that the word of the Lord will spread rapidly and be glorified, just as it did also with you; 2 and that we will be rescued from perverse and evil men; for not all have faith. As we continue in Revelation 2:10, we see that Christ tells the believers in Smyrna, and us, not only to expect persecution but that this persecution will only worsen, Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Notice in verse 10 that our Lord says, “the devil is about to cast some of you into prison.” What a great reminder of who our battle is against each day. We see this in Ephesians 6:12, For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Knowing who our battle is against helps us to be prepared.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about who our battle is with each day and how to pray for those who are living in persecution? 2. Knowing your battle is with the devil and the spiritual forces of darkness, how are you preparing for battle each day?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week we focus on the second of the seven churches that our Lord Jesus Christ spoke to through the Apostle John. This week we examine what our Lord Jesus Christ says to the church at Smyrna and, of course, to us as believers today. Our Lord introduces Himself as follows in Revelation 2:8 “The first and the last, who was dead, and has come...

Day 2

To better understand what our Lord Jesus Christ says to the believers in Smyrna in Revelation 2:9, we must know a few things about the city of Smyrna. Smyrna was a wealthy city located on the Aegean sea. It had a protected harbor and sat at the foot of Mount Pagus. Smyrna was often called a “flower” or “crown” in East Asia because of its beau...

Day 3

We are going to focus again on Revelation 2:9 today. As we saw yesterday, all Christians need to expect that persecution and suffering are going to come. Though we don’t experience persecution and suffering much here in Kentucky or the USA, we have fellow believers worldwide who do face persecution and suffering simply because they are pursui...

Day 5

As we have been walking through the devotions this week, we have seen that persecution and suffering are guaranteed for all believers. God has also revealed that our spiritual battles are not with people but against Satan and all of the spiritual forces of wickedness and darkness. Today we see how Christ called the believers in Smyrna, and is...

Day 6

As we examine our lives, we need to ask ourselves each day if we are living faithfully for our Lord. As we saw yesterday, every believer will receive “the crown of life” as an inheritance from our Lord. We know as Christians that suffering and persecution are promised in this life. We must choose to respond in a way that honors our Lord and n...

Day 7

As we have learned this week, a life that is faithful to Christ to death is a life that will live eternally with Him. On the contrary, a life that is lived apart from Christ is a life that will experience eternal death. As we close out this week, we read in Revelation 2:11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. ...
