Day 5

Scripture to Read: Revelation 2:10

As we have been walking through the devotions this week, we have seen that persecution and suffering are guaranteed for all believers. God has also revealed that our spiritual battles are not with people but against Satan and all of the spiritual forces of wickedness and darkness. Today we see how Christ called the believers in Smyrna, and is calling us today, to be faithful to Him. Christ also calls us not to walk in fear but to walk in faith in Him because He is our living, loving Savior. Christ’s call to the believers in Smyrna, and us, is to walk in endurance all the way to death (Revelation 2:10 Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. Over the past 2,000 years millions of Christians have been killed because of their relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ. Even today Christians are being killed in other parts of the world because they are unwilling to deny Christ as Lord and Savior. We may or may not see this happen here in the USA in our lifetime, but we know persecution and suffering are a guarantee for all Christians. But the promise that Christ gives to the believers in Smyrna and all believers is the sweet reward of “the crown of life.” The “crown of life” is the inheritance of eternal life for every Christian, which includes being in the presence of God and the removal of all sin and suffering. This inheritance is what we have to look forward to one day.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about walking with Him daily and remaining faithful to Him no matter what you face in this life? 2. How are you currently living faithfully to God each day? How are you encouraging other believers to do the same?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week we focus on the second of the seven churches that our Lord Jesus Christ spoke to through the Apostle John. This week we examine what our Lord Jesus Christ says to the church at Smyrna and, of course, to us as believers today. Our Lord introduces Himself as follows in Revelation 2:8 “The first and the last, who was dead, and has come...

Day 2

To better understand what our Lord Jesus Christ says to the believers in Smyrna in Revelation 2:9, we must know a few things about the city of Smyrna. Smyrna was a wealthy city located on the Aegean sea. It had a protected harbor and sat at the foot of Mount Pagus. Smyrna was often called a “flower” or “crown” in East Asia because of its beau...

Day 3

We are going to focus again on Revelation 2:9 today. As we saw yesterday, all Christians need to expect that persecution and suffering are going to come. Though we don’t experience persecution and suffering much here in Kentucky or the USA, we have fellow believers worldwide who do face persecution and suffering simply because they are pursui...

Day 4

Knowing our true riches are only found in Christ is critical to living for Christ each day. We know all believers will suffer persecution at the hands of perverse and evil people, even if it has not happened yet. For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing persecution, we need to pray and ask God to deliver them. That is why God led...

Day 6

As we examine our lives, we need to ask ourselves each day if we are living faithfully for our Lord. As we saw yesterday, every believer will receive “the crown of life” as an inheritance from our Lord. We know as Christians that suffering and persecution are promised in this life. We must choose to respond in a way that honors our Lord and n...

Day 7

As we have learned this week, a life that is faithful to Christ to death is a life that will live eternally with Him. On the contrary, a life that is lived apart from Christ is a life that will experience eternal death. As we close out this week, we read in Revelation 2:11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. ...
