Scripture to Read: Matthew 6:23
Jesus gives us this warning in Matthew 6:23, “But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” What Christ is saying is that when we choose to be spiritually blind, our body reaps the consequence of being empty of God’s Word. Our spiritual bucket must be filled every day. In other words, we must feed on God’s Word the same way we feed on our favorite meal. We cannot settle for a five-minute reading and expect to be ready for the spiritual battles of our day. There is too much at stake in this life for us not to pursue God and His Word daily. There is darkness all around us, and our battle is unseen but nonetheless very real. God tells us in Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” So, the battle is not with one another but with a spiritual darkness we cannot see. God also tells us in 2 Corinthians 10:4, “for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses.” Christ in us is the divine power we have to overcome so that our body is full of Light and not darkness. For those dead in their sins (Ephesians 2:1–3), we must share Christ so they hopefully are delivered as well.
