Day 2

Scripture to Read: Matthew 6:19

As our Lord God Almighty speaks to us each day through His Word, He wants us not only to read His Word but to know how to apply it to our lives every day. Jesus said in Matthew 6:19, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” The material treasures of this world can become a major stumbling block in our lives if we do not live guarded against them. Some of those things include but are not limited to a new and bigger house, a new and better car, more new clothes, more new shoes, having the latest greatest cell phone, taking exotic holidays, owning whatever the latest craze might be, and the list could go on. None of these things are bad in and of themselves, but what we must ask ourselves is this, “Do we really need this?” If any of these things are not a need, then why would we spend the money God has given us? Why would we waste the resources that are a blessing from our Lord? Jesus warns us that the stuff of this world just does not last. Jesus even says this about the things of this world: moths eat our things, rust destroys them, and thieves will try to break in and steal what we have. Again, Jesus is not saying we should buy nothing; He’s reminding us that if we accumulate a lot of stuff, none of it is going to last and none of it has lasting value.

Challenge & Application

· Why does our Lord give us such a powerful word about not treasuring the things in this world? · How have the things in this world failed you when you initially thought you could not live without that thing?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God has taught us much so far as we have been walking through “The Sermon on the Mount.” Over these next few days, our Lord Jesus Christ will be challenging us about what we should treasure and what we should not treasure. When we treasure something, we love it dearly, we hold tightly to it, we have a special place in our heart for it, and mo...

Day 3

One of the things our Lord God Almighty always does is that He never tells us what not to do without giving us what we should do. Our Lord Jesus Christ tells us in Matthew 6:20, “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal.” Storing up treasures in heaven at...

Day 4

Jesus tells us where to store our treasure in Matthew 6:20, but then He tells us why this is so important. Jesus said in Matthew 6:21, “for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” What we treasure reveals to us and everyone else what our greatest wishes are, where our deepest desires hunger, and that on which our life is focus...

Day 5

Jesus has told us that we must store up our treasures in heaven, and then He says (in Matthew 6:22) “The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.” What our Lord is telling us is that when we are focused on God and His Word, our whole body will reap the benefits of God’s Word. God said i...

Day 6

Since our eye is the lamp of our body, as Jesus said in Matthew 6:22, we must guard what we choose to look at, read, study, watch, and focus on. God reminds us in Ephesians 5:8–9, “for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light 9 (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousne...

Day 7

Jesus gives us this warning in Matthew 6:23, “But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” What Christ is saying is that when we choose to be spiritually blind, our body reaps the consequence of being empty of God’s Word. Our spiritual bucket must b...
