Scripture to Read: Matthew 6:21
Jesus tells us where to store our treasure in Matthew 6:20, but then He tells us why this is so important. Jesus said in Matthew 6:21, “for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” What we treasure reveals to us and everyone else what our greatest wishes are, where our deepest desires hunger, and that on which our life is focused. God’s desire for us is that we hunger and thirst for His righteousness (Matthew 5:6). God wants us to hunger for His Word the same way a baby longs for the pure milk of its mom (1 Peter 2:2). God wants us to know that when we treasure His Word that we will walk in obedience to His Word and not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11). Our choices define either how shallow and narrow or how broad and deep we go in our fellowship with our Lord and His Word. God does not want us to remain infants in our walk with Him. God tells us in Ephesians 4:14–15, “As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him…” God knows that as we mature in Him by treasuring Him and His Word we are a more useful tool for His kingdom and glory. We must examine ourselves to make sure we’re treasuring what honors our Lord.
