Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:16
As we know, we are “salt” and “light” because our Lord Jesus Christ lives in us (1 Corinthians 3:16, 1 Corinthians 6:19–20). Therefore, as we have been taught this entire week, our Lord expects us to BE “salt” and “light” to everyone around us. In the devotion from yesterday, we examined that we shine the light of our Lord through the way we do our “good works” (Ephesians 2:10, Titus 2:14, Titus 3:8). So, with that in mind, let’s examine a little further what God says in Colossians 3:23–24, “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” God had Paul write these words so we understand that as we shine brightly for our Lord, even though men see our “good works” and glorify God, we are not doing our “good works” unto people, but we do what we do to please our Lord. The reward we are looking forward to is not of this world. The reward we look forward to is being with our Lord for eternity, continuing to do “good works” for Him. We will not be idle in heaven because God created us for “good works.” Remember that before sin entered this world, God had already placed Adam in the garden to cultivate it and keep it (Genesis 2:15). So, God’s plan has always been for us to work and to fulfill His work for His pleasure.
Challenge & Application
· As you work each day, how are you making sure you “do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men”?
· How have you seen other Christians model well, doing their work for the Lord and not for people?
