Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:14
Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:14, “You are the light of the world.” We know Jesus has already described us as “salt,” and now He tells us we’re “light.” Let’s examine what light does or maybe better said, what the benefits of light are. First, light is the sole source of food generation for all living organisms. In biology, photosynthesis is the concept in which food is synthesized in green leaves in the presence of light. The energy from light is trapped as chemical energy and stored as food. God desires to use us to feed the “spiritually hungry” and to be His source to help others grow in their walk with Him. Second, without light, our eyes might be useless to us but because of light, our eyes receive reflected images of objects and then that information is sent to our brains. We know what we're seeing from the images sent to our brains. When we share the light of God’s Truth, God takes His Truth, penetrates the darkened heart of those who are lost, and shines His light in their lives so that they hopefully perceive that God is who they need. So, when Jesus tells us that we are “the light of the world,” He’s reminding us that our role is vital to helping others be fed spiritually, to see God’s Truth clearly, and to walk in the fullness of Him, for He is our “Light.” Just as Jesus tells us in John 8:12, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
