Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:13
Being “salty” means that our life should be lived so that we add something good to people’s lives. Jesus said, “if the salt has become tasteless… It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” Jesus knows that if we compromise our belief in Him and His Word and if we begin to question the authority of God’s Word and start believing and living according to the lies of this world, then as disciples of Christ, we will become watered down. We will no longer be effective tools for God’s kingdom and glory. As a result, our testimony will be “thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” Jesus is not talking about someone losing their salvation, but they will no longer produce “good works.” God had Paul write about this in 1 Corinthians 3:11–15, “For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. 14 If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.” May our works endure the fire of God for His glory.
Challenge & Application
· God does not want us to become “tasteless.” So, what are you doing to stay effective for God's kingdom and glory?
· What should anyone who has become “tasteless” and ineffective do? (Hint: Acts 3:19.)
