Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:15
Jesus continues to use examples of how lights are used so that we do not miss the purpose He has for us. Remember that God teaches us in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” All of us have been given “good works” to do each day for God’s kingdom and glory. So, Jesus said this in Matthew 5:15, “nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.” Everyone knows that a lamp is not lit and then hidden or covered. The lamp is placed in a place where the light can permeate the entire room. There are too many Christians today who will use excuses for not shining brightly so that others will know that they belong to our Lord Jesus Christ. Most excuses come out of a heart filled with fear (just too afraid of ridicule or failure), a heart that has become complacent (smug, self-satisfied, prideful), a heart of indifference (apathetic, unconcerned, uncaring), or a heart focused on the pleasures of this world. No matter what causes someone to hide their light, all of it is sin. Christ desires us to reflect Him and to be imitators of Him. God tells us in Ephesians 5:1, “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.” To imitate Christ means to shine brightly the love of our Heavenly Father so others may know Him as we do.
Challenge & Application
· When have you fallen into the trap of hiding the light of Christ in you, and what did you do to make things right?
· How will you make sure your light shines brightly this week so others may see Christ in you and through you?
