Scripture to Read: Matthew 5:14
In Matthew 5:14, Jesus also said, “A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” What a great illustration for us to take to heart. Jesus is stating the obvious—cities setting high atop a hill can be seen from miles away. At night, when all the buildings of that city are shining brightly, the lights dispel the darkness, and everyone knows exactly where that city is located. If we are to be the light Christ has told us to be, then everyone will know who we belong to and why we belong to Him. God reminds us in Ephesians 5:8, “for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light.” Before we surrendered to Christ as Lord and Savior, God tells us that we were darkness. But because Christ now lives in us, through His Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20), we are now light in the Lord. Since we are light, God expects us to live our lives reflecting our Lord Jesus Christ, being constantly mindful that we are His children. God expects us to live this way because He tells us in Ephesians 5:9, “(for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth).” In other words, God the Holy Spirit living in us produces His fruit of goodness, righteousness, and truth through us (Galatians 5:22–23). So, our lives are shining the light of Christ as we live according to Him and not according to our old way of life when we were darkness.

· How can you help other Christians who are struggling to see who they are in Christ see that they are light in Him too?
