Scripture to Read: Ruth 3
In Ruth 3, we find God’s continued provision for Ruth. Naomi knows that Boaz is family and according to Old Testament Law, if a young woman was widowed, then a close family member was to redeem her to keep the family name going (Deuteronomy 25:5-10). So, Naomi instructs Ruth on what to do. For Ruth to lay at Boaz’s feet (Ruth 3:8-13) was a sign of submission, a sign of being willing to serve Boaz. But this was also a sign of Ruth’s willingness to marry Boaz if Boaz would redeem her from being a widow. Boaz was completely humbled by Ruth’s servant heart (Ruth 3:10-13) and again showed Ruth incredible favor. Humility is an act of our will and is a characteristic that God tells us we must walk in daily. God reminds us in James 4:6, But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” God also says in 1 Peter 5:6-7, Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. We must choose to humble ourselves and when we do, we know we are pleasing our Lord. God chooses who to exalt and also who to humble if we do not humble ourselves. Just as Ruth was willing to humble herself, we must do the same and bring honor to our God and King.
