Scripture to Read: Joshua 2:1-7
God’s plan of redemption has been laid out, even before the foundation of the world. At times, we as believers can think that redemption only started through Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. But God has been redeeming the lost since sin entered Adam and Eve in Genesis 3. Rahab is another individual in the lineage of our Lord Jesus Christ, mentioned in Matthew 1:5. This week we will look at Rahab through the eyes of God’s Word and unpack this beautiful story of redemption. As we read Joshua 2:1-4, we find that Joshua had sent two spies to “view the land, especially Jericho” (Joshua 2:1). In God’s sovereign plan, the two spies went to Rahab’s house and, as we read, we find out that Rahab was a prostitute. We don’t know how the two Israelite men knew to go to Rahab’s house. We do know that Rahab received the spies and then hid them when Jericho’s king sent to inquire about whether Rahab had the spies in her home. Rahab lied to the king of Jericho’s messengers and told these messengers that the two spies had left. Here in God’s Word, Rahab’s lie is not mentioned and it is not rebuked. If Rahab had not lied in seeking to be obedient to God, no doubt, God would have provided a way to preserve the life of the spies without lying. God, though, did protect the spies and Rahab as well. Though we’re tempted to do things our way, obedience to God is always the best choice.
