Scripture to Read: James 1:22-25
In light of all God has been teaching us this week about obedience, there is no doubt that James 1:22-25 ties directly to us walking in obedience to our Lord. Again, God continually brings us back to the reality that obedience to Him and His Word are the markers of a life surrendered to Christ. God tells us today that we need to prove ourselves to be doers of His Word and not merely hearers. To hear God’s Word but never do anything with it, God says, is like looking in a mirror, walking away and completely forgetting what you looked like. The only way to get God’s Word into us, so that we are continually walking in obedience to His Word, is to memorize His Word. Memorizing the Word of God takes a lot of hard work, but the benefits are eternal. Too many people, even many Christians, treat God’s Word like a cookbook. They read it but then do nothing with what they have read. If we read a cookbook, the recipes may stir our appetite but if we don’t make the meal and eat it, we stay hungry and our stomachs stay empty. If we treat God’s Word like a cookbook, we read it but never really take it in so we can walk in obedience to His Word. We end up filling our time with meaningless things that satisfy for a moment but leave us hungry and empty spiritually. Memorizing God’s Word feeds our souls and gives us all we need to walk with Him obediently.
