Day 6

Scripture to Read: Luke 10:30-37

God’s Word is so powerful, and God feeds us through His Word so we can actively live our lives for Him each day. As we continue to look at the parable “The Good Samaritan,” we find today that Jesus also mentions a Levite who came upon the person who had been robbed, beaten, and left for dead. Jesus mentions the Levite because Levites used this road quite often to travel between Jerusalem and Jericho. Jesus also mentions the Levite because Levites were also known to be more obligated to take care of those in need because of their position. A person in distress was a person in need. A person in distress had a right to expect an immediate helping hand and be given comfort from a Levite because of the Levite's position as a spiritual leader. In Wikipedia, we find that some of the Levite's principal roles in the Temple were singing Psalms during Temple services, performing construction and maintenance on the Temple, and performing other services. So again, this Levite who went by this man, in Jesus’s parable, would have been breaking the Law of God by not helping the person in need. God tells us in James 2:15-16, “ If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and be filled,’ and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?” God makes it clear that our faith is worthless if there are no actions with our faith.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about the Levite and his unwillingness to help someone in need? 2. Who could you serve this week, or this month, that you know is in need right now?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

At first glance, the question that the lawyer asked Jesus in Luke 10:25 seems like the type of question we would love for someone to ask us. Imagine being in the grocery store, or standing in the hallway in school, or being outside in your neighborhood, and someone asks you, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” First, we must ask ourselv...

Day 2

As we saw in yesterday’s devotion, a lawyer, an expert in Mosaic Law, came to Jesus with a question about how to inherit eternal life. Most of us would love for evangelism to be that easy, that people would just walk up to us and ask us how to inherit eternal life. But, since this lawyer was an expert in Mosaic Law, Jesus did not answer the l...

Day 3

Today we examine Luke 10:28, as Jesus qualifies for us, and for the lawyer who came to Him, what it takes to inherit eternal life. As we know from Luke 10:27, the lawyer had given his answer back to Jesus that loving God and loving people was what God’s Law said. Jesus then tells the lawyer, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will ...

Day 4

As we are unpacking Luke 10 this week, we have learned that loving God and loving people are the two greatest commandments that God has given us. We have also learned that loving God with all our being (all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength) and loving our neighbor as ourselves is the real test of us being followers of our Lord Jesus Chr...

Day 5

Today we begin to look at Jesus’s parable of “The Good Samaritan.” Jesus shared this parable with the lawyer because of the lawyer’s question, “And who is my neighbor?”, as the lawyer had tried to justify himself before Jesus. Remember that Jesus had told the lawyer to live according to the answer the lawyer had given to Jesus, which was to l...

Day 7

Today our focus is on the “Good Samaritan.” Jesus chose to use the “Good Samaritan” as an example because the Jews hated the Samaritans and the Jews were hated by the Samaritans. You can read more about the rift between the Samaritans and the Jews here: https://www.franciscanmedia.org/the-rift-between-jews-and-samaritans/. Because there was s...
