Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 10:29-37

Today we begin to look at Jesus’s parable of “The Good Samaritan.” Jesus shared this parable with the lawyer because of the lawyer’s question, “And who is my neighbor?”, as the lawyer had tried to justify himself before Jesus. Remember that Jesus had told the lawyer to live according to the answer the lawyer had given to Jesus, which was to love God and love others, as found in Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18. By loving God and loving others we fulfill God’s Law, but this is impossible to do without surrendering our lives to Christ as Lord. We, in and of ourselves, are not capable of loving God and loving others because (agape) love comes from God alone, for God is (agape) love (1 John 4:8 and 1 John 4:16). Agape is one of the Greek words for love in the Bible. God’s love is unconditional and sacrifices everything to serve others. God demonstrated this love perfectly to us through our Lord Jesus Christ’s life, death, burial, and resurrection. Therefore, Jesus begins to share the story with the lawyer of a man who was robbed, stripped of everything he had, beaten, and left for dead. The first person to pass by this man was a priest, doing nothing. Jesus mentions the priest because the priest would have been one of the most likely to perform an act of mercy because he was a priest. The priest’s selfish actions caused him to break the Law of God he taught to others. The priest did not love his neighbor as himself.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about (agape) love and about the priest? 2. How are you living out (agape) love in your fellowship with God and His Word and in your fellowship with others?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

At first glance, the question that the lawyer asked Jesus in Luke 10:25 seems like the type of question we would love for someone to ask us. Imagine being in the grocery store, or standing in the hallway in school, or being outside in your neighborhood, and someone asks you, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” First, we must ask ourselv...

Day 2

As we saw in yesterday’s devotion, a lawyer, an expert in Mosaic Law, came to Jesus with a question about how to inherit eternal life. Most of us would love for evangelism to be that easy, that people would just walk up to us and ask us how to inherit eternal life. But, since this lawyer was an expert in Mosaic Law, Jesus did not answer the l...

Day 3

Today we examine Luke 10:28, as Jesus qualifies for us, and for the lawyer who came to Him, what it takes to inherit eternal life. As we know from Luke 10:27, the lawyer had given his answer back to Jesus that loving God and loving people was what God’s Law said. Jesus then tells the lawyer, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will ...

Day 4

As we are unpacking Luke 10 this week, we have learned that loving God and loving people are the two greatest commandments that God has given us. We have also learned that loving God with all our being (all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength) and loving our neighbor as ourselves is the real test of us being followers of our Lord Jesus Chr...

Day 6

God’s Word is so powerful, and God feeds us through His Word so we can actively live our lives for Him each day. As we continue to look at the parable “The Good Samaritan,” we find today that Jesus also mentions a Levite who came upon the person who had been robbed, beaten, and left for dead. Jesus mentions the Levite because Levites used thi...

Day 7

Today our focus is on the “Good Samaritan.” Jesus chose to use the “Good Samaritan” as an example because the Jews hated the Samaritans and the Jews were hated by the Samaritans.
