Scripture to Read: Luke 10:26-27
As we saw in yesterday’s devotion, a lawyer, an expert in Mosaic Law, came to Jesus with a question about how to inherit eternal life. Most of us would love for evangelism to be that easy, that people would just walk up to us and ask us how to inherit eternal life. But, since this lawyer was an expert in Mosaic Law, Jesus did not answer the lawyer with a statement, but instead, Jesus asked the lawyer a probing question. Jesus asked the lawyer, “What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?” Jesus wanted this lawyer to take a more in-depth look at what he had known for many years. Since the lawyer was an expert in God’s Law, he knew the answer immediately, but the real question was, had he been walking in the Truth he already knew? Of course, the lawyer answered Jesus and said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” The lawyer made a quote right out of God’s Law from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18. If we have been a believer for more than three years, we should know quite a bit of God’s Word as well. Knowing God’s Word and living God’s Word are two different things. God does not want us to simply know His Word, but we must live His Word so we bear fruit for Him (James 1:22-25) daily.
Challenge & Application
1. What did God teach you today about the difference between knowing His Truth and actually living His Truth?
2. How will you begin to apply God’s Word to your life today and throughout this week?
