Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 10:29

As we are unpacking Luke 10 this week, we have learned that loving God and loving people are the two greatest commandments that God has given us. We have also learned that loving God with all our being (all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength) and loving our neighbor as ourselves is the real test of us being followers of our Lord Jesus Christ. It’s interesting today that in Luke 10:29 that God tells us the lawyer wished to “justify himself.” Let’s consider this statement for a minute. To justify ourselves means we make a case for why we did what we did, and we try to prove that we were right in whatever actions we performed or chose not to perform. The lawyer was trying to justify his life as being right with God. There are many people today who try to justify their lifestyles, actions, words, etc…as if they know what is right and wrong in their minds. The problem with us trying to justify ourselves before God is that we are born sinners. God even tells us in James 2:10, “For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.” So, even if we were able to live our entire life obeying God and never disobeying Him, except once, God says we become guilty of breaking all of His Law. This is why we need Christ as our Savior, for apart from Him we are guilty sinners before a Holy God.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about those who try to justify themselves before Him? 2. How will you guard yourself from seeking to justify yourself before God or even others?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

At first glance, the question that the lawyer asked Jesus in Luke 10:25 seems like the type of question we would love for someone to ask us. Imagine being in the grocery store, or standing in the hallway in school, or being outside in your neighborhood, and someone asks you, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” First, we must ask ourselv...

Day 2

As we saw in yesterday’s devotion, a lawyer, an expert in Mosaic Law, came to Jesus with a question about how to inherit eternal life. Most of us would love for evangelism to be that easy, that people would just walk up to us and ask us how to inherit eternal life. But, since this lawyer was an expert in Mosaic Law, Jesus did not answer the l...

Day 3

Today we examine Luke 10:28, as Jesus qualifies for us, and for the lawyer who came to Him, what it takes to inherit eternal life. As we know from Luke 10:27, the lawyer had given his answer back to Jesus that loving God and loving people was what God’s Law said. Jesus then tells the lawyer, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will ...

Day 5

Today we begin to look at Jesus’s parable of “The Good Samaritan.” Jesus shared this parable with the lawyer because of the lawyer’s question, “And who is my neighbor?”, as the lawyer had tried to justify himself before Jesus. Remember that Jesus had told the lawyer to live according to the answer the lawyer had given to Jesus, which was to l...

Day 6

God’s Word is so powerful, and God feeds us through His Word so we can actively live our lives for Him each day. As we continue to look at the parable “The Good Samaritan,” we find today that Jesus also mentions a Levite who came upon the person who had been robbed, beaten, and left for dead. Jesus mentions the Levite because Levites used thi...

Day 7

Today our focus is on the “Good Samaritan.” Jesus chose to use the “Good Samaritan” as an example because the Jews hated the Samaritans and the Jews were hated by the Samaritans.
