Day 6

Scripture to Read: John 4:19–24

It’s interesting that once Jesus shared with the woman about her past, she immediately changed the subject to the best place to worship God. We read in John 4:19–24, The woman *said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.” 21 Jesus *said to her, “Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” When people are confronted with the true nature of their hearts, they often start talking about religion as if religion makes them better. Though the woman sought to sound spiritual, Jesus lovingly guided her back to His Truth. Jesus told her that true worship of God was only possible in spirit and truth. In other words, worship is not about the place, but it’s about the condition of a person’s heart. A lost person can do religion, but they cannot worship God. Only a person with a transformed heart, through a relationship with God in Christ and His Holy Spirit living in that person, can worship God wholeheartedly.

Challenge & Application

• When people want to talk about religion, how do you guide them back to the truth of God’s Word? • Why can’t lost people genuinely worship God, according to what Jesus said in John 4:23–24?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus’ ministry, while here on earth, reached into the lives of those who were spiritually hungry and often in desperate need. But those who are satisfied with their lives and who see no spiritual need within them are the ones who are usually the hardest to reach with the gospel of Christ. They have allowed the trappings of this world to capt...

Day 2

In reading back through John 4:1–6, God had John give us some details about where Jesus went and why He stopped where He did. We read in John 4:6–7a, “and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 There *came a woman of Samaria to draw water.” Jesus stopped a...

Day 3

Jesus was led by God the Father to a divine appointment to encounter the woman from Samaria. Make sure to see in John 4:8 that Jesus’ disciples had gone into the city to buy food, so Jesus was alone. So, to better understand why this encounter was so significant, we read in John 4:9, For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. There was a hatr...

Day 4

In John 4:7, we see that Jesus was the first to begin the conversation with the woman from Samaria by asking her to give Him a drink from the well. This woman would have been shocked for two reasons. First, men usually never spoke to women in public during Jesus’ time. Second, since she was from Samaria, she knew she was hated by the Jews. Bu...

Day 5

After Jesus spoke about the living water and never thirsting again, the woman responded in John 4:15, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” The woman simply wanted her physical needs met. She was so focused on her daily needs that she missed that Jesus was there to meet her spiritual needs. Jes...

Day 7

Jesus would not leave any doubt in the woman’s mind about Who she was talking with. We read in John 4:25–26, The woman *said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, “I who speak to you am He.” Jesus declared Who He was and let the woman k...
