Day 5

Scripture to Read: John 4:15–18

After Jesus spoke about the living water and never thirsting again, the woman responded in John 4:15, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” The woman simply wanted her physical needs met. She was so focused on her daily needs that she missed that Jesus was there to meet her spiritual needs. Jesus, though, redirected the conversation so that she could begin to see the need within her heart. The woman and Jesus then had this conversation in John 4:16–18, “Go, call your husband and come here.” 17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this you have said truly.” Jesus was helping her see that she had tried to fill the emptiness of her life through different men. Of course, none of those men filled the void in her heart, for she had been through five husbands and was living with the sixth man in her life. Notice that Jesus never condemned her but only pointed out the facts of her life. She knew she was empty and in great need; she just did not know how to meet that need. We have people all around us seeking to fill the void in their lives with the stuff of this world. We must share Christ with them so they have the opportunity to allow Christ to fill that void.

Challenge & Application

• How did Jesus treat the woman from Samaria and how can we learn from His example? • How will you help someone this week see that only Christ can fill the void in their hearts?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus’ ministry, while here on earth, reached into the lives of those who were spiritually hungry and often in desperate need. But those who are satisfied with their lives and who see no spiritual need within them are the ones who are usually the hardest to reach with the gospel of Christ. They have allowed the trappings of this world to capt...

Day 2

In reading back through John 4:1–6, God had John give us some details about where Jesus went and why He stopped where He did. We read in John 4:6–7a, “and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 There *came a woman of Samaria to draw water.” Jesus stopped a...

Day 3

Jesus was led by God the Father to a divine appointment to encounter the woman from Samaria. Make sure to see in John 4:8 that Jesus’ disciples had gone into the city to buy food, so Jesus was alone. So, to better understand why this encounter was so significant, we read in John 4:9, For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. There was a hatr...

Day 4

In John 4:7, we see that Jesus was the first to begin the conversation with the woman from Samaria by asking her to give Him a drink from the well. This woman would have been shocked for two reasons. First, men usually never spoke to women in public during Jesus’ time. Second, since she was from Samaria, she knew she was hated by the Jews. Bu...

Day 6

It’s interesting that once Jesus shared with the woman about her past, she immediately changed the subject to the best place to worship God. We read in John 4:19–24, The woman *said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to w...

Day 7

Jesus would not leave any doubt in the woman’s mind about Who she was talking with. We read in John 4:25–26, The woman *said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, “I who speak to you am He.” Jesus declared Who He was and let the woman k...
