Day 2

Scripture to Read: John 4:1–7

In reading back through John 4:1–6, God had John give us some details about where Jesus went and why He stopped where He did. We read in John 4:6–7a, “and Jacob’s well was there. So Jesus, being wearied from His journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 There *came a woman of Samaria to draw water.” Jesus stopped at Jacob’s well first because He was tired. What a great reminder that Jesus, being in an earthly body like ours, experienced the same weariness that you and I feel after a long walk. But we must note that God made sure to include the time Jesus arrived at the well, which was about noon (about the sixth hour). The time is important because noon was not the normal time for women to come to the well to draw water. God shows us this in Genesis 24:11, “He made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at evening time, the time when women go out to draw water.” Women came to the well in the evening time, but the woman from Samaria came at noon and was alone. God shows us that this woman was not accepted within her community or she would have been with the rest of the women that evening. When God the Holy Spirit guides us to opportunities to minister to others, we must be aware of what He shows us about their needs so we can serve them well through His power and for the glory of our Lord.

Challenge & Application

• What details has God revealed to you in John 4:1–6 that have not been discussed yet and why are they important? • How has God revealed things to you about someone He’s called you to serve that has helped you serve them well?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus’ ministry, while here on earth, reached into the lives of those who were spiritually hungry and often in desperate need. But those who are satisfied with their lives and who see no spiritual need within them are the ones who are usually the hardest to reach with the gospel of Christ. They have allowed the trappings of this world to capt...

Day 3

Jesus was led by God the Father to a divine appointment to encounter the woman from Samaria. Make sure to see in John 4:8 that Jesus’ disciples had gone into the city to buy food, so Jesus was alone. So, to better understand why this encounter was so significant, we read in John 4:9, For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. There was a hatr...

Day 4

In John 4:7, we see that Jesus was the first to begin the conversation with the woman from Samaria by asking her to give Him a drink from the well. This woman would have been shocked for two reasons. First, men usually never spoke to women in public during Jesus’ time. Second, since she was from Samaria, she knew she was hated by the Jews. Bu...

Day 5

After Jesus spoke about the living water and never thirsting again, the woman responded in John 4:15, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.” The woman simply wanted her physical needs met. She was so focused on her daily needs that she missed that Jesus was there to meet her spiritual needs. Jes...

Day 6

It’s interesting that once Jesus shared with the woman about her past, she immediately changed the subject to the best place to worship God. We read in John 4:19–24, The woman *said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to w...

Day 7

Jesus would not leave any doubt in the woman’s mind about Who she was talking with. We read in John 4:25–26, The woman *said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, He will declare all things to us.” 26 Jesus *said to her, “I who speak to you am He.” Jesus declared Who He was and let the woman k...
